Rev.
Carol McVetty - English Congregation Pastor
& Minister of Discipleship

Pastor
Carol took what might be considered a surprising route to
leadership at
North
Shore
. Growing up outside
of
Detroit
with all the privileges of suburbia, she is now deeply in love
with the city. Starting
out headed for a career in medicine, she was utterly surprised by
a call to pastoral ministry after graduating from college.
At that time she had never met an ordained woman. Her
ministry began with a tiny rural church in upstate
New York
. But soon after that
she and her husband, Rev. Douglas Harris, began to work together
in urban, multicultural ministry.
More than 20 years later, it remains their passion and joy.
Carol holds a M.Div. from
Andover
Newton
Theological
School
and a BA from
Bucknell
University
. She has also
studied theology at
New
College
,
University of Edinburgh
,
Scotland
. Before coming to
North
Shore
ten years ago, she was Co-pastor of the First Baptist Church of
Detroit, and pastor of the
Netherwood
Baptist
Church
in
Salt Point
,
NY
.
In ministry, Carol focuses on spiritual formation for
adults, building Christian community, and leading worship that
engages head, heart and senses in ways that allow God to transform
us. She has been
committed long term to racial reconciliation, the strengthening of
women’s voices in the church, and non-violent conflict
resolution. More recently, she is interested in revitalizing the
church by getting past the polarities of liberal/conservative.
Just for fun Carol loves walks in the neighborhood, curling
up with a good book and a cup of hot tea, potluck suppers, front
porch swings, gardening (without
the cell phone), and feeding college students and other young
people who don’t cook. She
and Doug are the parents of two young adult daughters.
