News & Information about Burma
New families of refugees from Burma have arrived this summer and are joining North Shore's Karen Fellowship. As we deepen our relationships and minister together with people from the ethnic minority groups in Burma, current information on the situation there is very helpful. It also prompts our specific and heartfelt prayers for the people still in Burma.
We invite you to click on this link to view the latest issue of Last Month in Burma, a publication of Burma Campaign UK which works for Human Rights, Democracy and Development in Burma.

May 2012
A devastating fire leveled the Kawthoowlei Karen Baptist Bible School and College at the Mae La Refugee camp in Thailand on April 28, 2012.
Dear Friends of the Refugees: Two prayer requests for the refugees at the Mae La Refugee Camp are requested. Please give them to your family, friends and churches: 1. Most of you may have already received an email informing you of the fire in Mae La. Last night I received a phone call from Pastor Robert Htway, Chairman of the Karen Refugee Committee. Robert requested that we call upon our churches and families to pray for the Reverend Dr. Simon Htoo, and the Kawthoowlei Karen Baptist Bible School and College (KKBBSC). The KKBBSC and Simon's home were burned to the ground yesterday. These beautiful facilities served as a hotel for visitors and distinguished guests, a meeting place to conduct ceremony and fellowship, and above all, a bible school that so beautifully gave hope and purpose to the refugee youth incarcerated within the confines of the Mae La camp. It is gone now, but we are thankful that Dr. Simon was away conducting a wedding and not injured, and that the huge fire did not spread destructively to the more closely packed confines of residences in the camp. The bravery of the Karen people, and the primitive fire-fighting techniques are clearly seen in the video of the blaze. (Link to video, below). Video of Mae La Fire: click on this link to view video 2. Pastor Robert also passed along his concern that the peace process between the Karen and Burma Army is spawning many unfounded rumors in the camp about how the Army will force the refugees back into Burma. These rumors are invariably bad news to composure, morale and order. Robert has asked that we pray for peace among the refugees and trust that his (Robert's) organization, the KRC will serve as an effective mediator between the political factions that may have their own purposes and designs laid out for the 100,000+ refugees who now reside in Thailand. Also, please pray for their safety.
