ACT 20:35
“I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that the He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
North Shore Baptist Church has been supporting and attentive to Karen people who belong to one of the ethnic minority groups in Burma . The Karen migrated to United States as refugees after being repressed by the military regime of Myanmar ( Burma ). Let us help to meet their continuing physical, psychological and spiritual needs by our giving and friendship.
Currently, Myanmar ( Burma ) has a volatile political situation under the authoritarian rule of its government. Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Prize, has been under house arrest by the Myanmar military regime. The same regime has also imprisoned more than 400,000 monks who staged a protest march. In addition, ethnic minorities including Karen have been repressed by the military regime and have been facing unimaginable hardships. The refugee camps of neighboring Thailand teem with people who fled from Burma . Under such circumstances, a group of Karen Christians who arrived in Chicago all the way from Thailand found a place for prayer at our church. They called for other Karen people in the area to join them and established the CKC (Chicago Karen Community). Their path reminds us Japanese congregation that we also found a refuge at North Shore Baptist when the church accepted Japanese Americans who resettled in Chicago , having been released from internment camps after World War II. If North Shore Baptist Church had not welcomed them at that time, the current Japanese congregation would never have existed. We are very proud of this ongoing tradition of hospitality and love of North Shore Baptist Church shown to those who are in need. Let us welcome. |
