Rev.
Douglas Harris - English Congregation Pastor

Rev.
Douglas L. Harris (Pastor Doug) is the third son of his artist
father and church secretary mother.
He was born and raised in
Toledo
,
Ohio
and spent much of his life growing up in an urban interracial
church and community. His passion for ministry has always centered
on his belief that God’s Love in Jesus the Christ is for ALL
PEOPLE! He resisted
God’s call to ordained ministry until he realized that God was
calling him to be himself in ministry rather than play the role of
being “the minister.”
This approach has freed him and those he serves to discover
who we all have been created to be by God.
Pastor
Doug enjoys trying out different preaching styles and loves to
dream big dreams for the church.
Engaging in thoughtful conversations about life and finding
things to laugh about are important to him.
He has spent his whole life and ministry committed to
bringing together people that the world would suggest can not get
along. That is why he
feels deeply called to this church that is diverse in cultures,
theological perspectives, generations and genders.
He
and his wife, Pastor Carol, came to the Pastoral Team in January
of 1997. Previously,
from 1984 to 1997 they served as Co-Pastors of the First Baptist
Church of Detroit, Michigan, which is an interracial congregation
in the center of Metro Detroit.
Rev.
Harris has a BA degree in History, Psychology and Sociology from
the
University
of
Toledo. His Master of
Divinity degree is from the Andover Newton Theological School of
Newton Centre, MA. Over
the years he has served in various ways in the American Baptist
Churches and presently is the President of the Minister’s
Council of ABC of Metro Chicago.
Pastor
Doug and Pastor Carol live in the neighborhood and are active in
the community. They
have two young adult daughters.
