Mike
Starrett - Head Chef
Michael Starrett is the first born male
"Starrett" of his generation to North Shore in a long
tradition. His grandparents founded the Young Married class
in 1936 (now the Friendship Class). He was raised in
Chicago, Des Plaines, Wauwatosa WI, and finally Arlington
Heights. He has four sisters and a step brother.
In his walk with Jesus, he became an evangelical
during the 1980's which was a difficult time. Being a member
of the Moral Majority and finally understanding his sexuality led
to a huge conflict. He was married and had a beautiful
daughter (Jennifer). That union fell apart.
In
1992, Mike returned to NSBC. Then Senior Pastor Pomeroy and
a psychologist brought an end to the spiritual conflict. His
motto now is "All truth, love and justice are from
God." He began assisting Chef Paul Dodd in the food
service/Fellowship Ministry. Mike's greatest spiritual gifts
include service, wisdom and ability to read a recipe!
1996
brought a new unit to his life. Paul Dodd retired and Mike
took over a Head Chef. Mike also met Richard Diaz that
year. That have lived together as a "whole person"
since that time.
Mike's specialties include lasagna and spaghetti. He insists upon personal
perfection and variety in every occasion where his services are
required. He doesn't take pride in his work because
"pride goeth before the fall." He is just happy
everyone is satisfied.
He loves the
Oakland Raiders and Athletics. He played football at Eastern
Illinois where he earned a BA in economics and a BS in
Finance. Mike jokes that with those degrees, he understands
why he's underpaid.
Some people have said
in the past "still waters run deep." Mike says
that is true. Look at the 2000 millennium tile project and
you will se Michael and Richard are represented. They
live on the near west side a few blocks from Stroger Hospital.
Mike
is always happy to be of service to his brothers and sisters in
Christ. He quotes the Master, "Ask and your joy will be
full." That is why Fellowship is here.
