Special Events

Many at North Shore were especially attentive to the recent news about the repressive military regime that rules Myanmar ( Burma ) because refugees from Burma are now a part of our congregation.  Follow this link to a video clip that shows a glimpse of the repression and violence directed against the Karen people, the ethnic group arriving among us as refugees, who remain in Burma .  Viewer discretion is advised.

Assistance for our Karen friends:  Over the past months, NSBC has helped to meet the needs of 25+ Karen families.  We expect another large group to show up in the next few months.  We have a couple of ways that you can help us meet their continuing needs.  Click here for a list in English, and here for a list in Spanish.

Sources of Internet Information

www.karenkonnection.org - Background information on the Binkley's (Baptist missionaries to Burma), the Karen, the situation in Burma, the refugee resettlement process and how it relates to the Baptist churches in the USA.

www.tbbc.org - Site for the Thailand Burma Border Consortium.  This is the organization that feeds, clothes and houses all the refugees in the camps along the Thai/Burma border.  They have also gathered data and published several well respected reports on the situation of IDPs.  Their 6 month reports offer a good summary of the history of the conflict and up to date analysis of the current situation.

www.freeburmarangers.org

www.prayforburma.org - Two related Chritian organizations that support operations inside Burma among the Internally Displaced People (IDPs).  They can give first hand accounts of active hotspots.

www.burmaissues.org - They offer a weekly summary of Burma related news which can be received for free by e-mail.  Or, recent offerings can be viewed on their website.

www.khrg.org - The site for the Karen Human Rights Group.  Lots of current news and updates as well as good historical and background information.

www.karen.org - This site is good for general information on the Karen as a people group.

http://www.drum.fastmail.fm/index.html - Many Karen language materials including Karen script fonts for computers and an online English to Karen dictionary.

http://www.cetana.org/Home.html - Picture dictionary, English-Burmese-Karen and other resources
