English congregation
|
In the English language congregation, we strive weekly to manifest the kind of community we believe God desires for the world: a community transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ to find healing, wholeness, and joy. We believe God calls us into both personal spiritual growth and the work of justice and peace in our neighborhood, our city, and our world. Worship is a place we find support for fulfilling that call.
Even within the “English Language” congregation of this multi-lingual and multi-ethnic church, we are incredibly diverse. Worshiping together every week are members & friends from many backgrounds: African & African American, Latinx, Asian & Asian American, and Euro American; LGBTQ people and straight allies; mainline-liberal, evangelical, and liberationist believers, and even a few on the path of the spiritual but not religious. For us, this is the central and true meaning of the word Baptist: to seek a gathering of many different kinds of people freely bringing different perspectives and interpretations into a broad tapestry of worship and commitment. Our most treasured value is the old Baptist principle of soul freedom.
Worship services follow a familiar yet living Protestant tradition. Sermons explore the deepest challenges of living a meaningful, just, and authentic life following the path of Jesus and the Christian religious tradition he inspired. The messages seek to be both thoughtful and heartfelt, speaking the language of both heart and mind. The Chancel Choir sings everything from Handel to Gospel to Taizé to World Music. Soloists and instrumentalists add variety to the mix. And the Karen Fellowship regularly shares its own music in worship.
Please come visit if this sounds intriguing! We hope to warmly greet you, while allowing you the freedom to explore without pressure. We’d love to greet you during the coffee hour that follows worship. We also have regular Bible study, opportunities for service and some special events. Feel free to contact a pastor for a chat as well.
