The youth group will have its annual winter retreat to Camp Tamarack in Wisconsin over President's Day Weekend, February 16-18. We will leave at 6 pm on Friday and return around 6 pm on Sunday. Cost is $15/youth.
The theme for this year is "Tearing Down Walls." How do we build walls between ourselves? How does God help us tear down those walls? For more information, contact Pastor Kathryn.

We are putting together a pictorial directory of members and friends of North Shore. We want everyone included! Appointments are being taken now for February 22nd through the 25th. Please see Sherry Nelson to reserve your time slot. There is no charge to be included in the directory. You will have the opportunity, if you wish, to purchase photo packages. A pictorial directory is a great way for us to get to know each other better and to put a name with a face. Arrangements can be made if you are unable to attend one of the sittings here.
We will have our annual Healing Service on Sunday, February 11, at 10:30 am. The service will take place in Howel Hall. The Healing Service is a combined worship with all of the congregations, in which we pray for healing of all kinds and perform the ritual of anointing with oil.
Everyone is invited to accompany the Japanese congregation to the commemoration of the annual Day of Remembrance, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the Executive Order which led to the incarceration of thousands of Japanese-Americans in internment camps during World War II. This year's theme is "Stop Repeating History."
The event is free of charge and will take place on Sunday, February 18, at 2:00 pm at the Chicago History Museum. Register online. Las Posadas traditionally reenact the struggles that Joseph and Mary faced in finding a room when traveling to Bethlehem. Multiple Latin American countries celebrate this Christmas tradition .
At North Shore, we celebrate the Posadas as a time of fellowship with one another, sing villancicos (Spanish-language Christmas carols), and enjoy good food. The Posadas are open to participants from all congregations. The Posadas will take place at 7:00 pm on the 8th and 4:30 pm on the 9th, 16th & 17th. Please contact Pastor Rony at rreyes@northshorebaptist.org for locations. After English and Spanish worship on December 17, we will gather in the sanctuary for our annual Christmas Showcase. We will hear the Christmas story read by our youth and songs from our children's Sunday School classes. Join us for this festive, intergenerational celebration!
Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year. We will celebrate this occasion with a joint morning worship service at 10:30 am. We will hear Christmas stories and remembrances from members of each congregation, and sing one another's carols.
Afterwards, we will gather for a meal to celebrate the Karen New Year, which takes place on December 18. In these darkening days, the weights of the year often become heavier. As families gather, we remember those who are no longer with us, or disagreements that have left family estranged. The season of gift-giving puts strain on those already struggling to make ends meet. The cold and the dark can be hard on our bodies, bringing out aches, pains, illness, and depression. These struggles stand in stark contrast to the merriment of the Christmas carols, holiday décor, and advertising campaigns proclaiming this to be the most wonderful time of the year.
It is important, through the various struggles of the season, to remember that we are not alone. To this end, we will be offering a Longest Night Service on December 20 at 7:00 pm in Nambu Chapel. It will be a time for us to gather to mark the losses we are grieving- whether they be loved ones lost, expectations dashed, financial security threatened- and sanctify them in the light of Christ’s Advent. It will be a candlelight service at which we will hold silence, pray, and reflect both on what we have lost in the past year and what has sustained us along the way. |
