Click here for pdf version. Overview: North Shore Baptist Church is a multi-racial, multi-lingual, inclusive community of faith on Chicago’s north side. We are one church, four congregations worshipping in English, Spanish, Japanese and Sgaw Karen, building the beloved community week by week. Our pastoral team of five works collaboratively to serve the needs of their congregations while nurturing the whole church through quarterly worship services, annual picnics, weekly coffee hours, and cross-congregational committees. We are anchored in our generous, historic building, which is buzzing throughout the week with community and church events alike. We are rooted in our Baptist faith. Our congregants come from near and far in the city and travel far and wide through mission, service, and ABC-USA engagement. We are proud to partner with neighborhood interfaith and ecumenical initiatives addressing the needs of the most vulnerable while building a stronger community, and to have commissioned many pastors and missionaries from our walls. With a strong sense of heritage and history we are focused on the present and the future. With a clear commitment to diversity and equity we seek to deepen engagement across differences and nurture community within each of our four congregations. Having been sustained by committed members and regular attendees, we ask anew what it means to truly serve our immediate neighbors. Roles and responsibilities: The English language pastor will provide spiritual care and leadership for the English language congregation: preaching and leading worship that speaks to people’s everyday lives; developing engaging programming that cultivates lay leadership capacities, biblical understanding, and spiritual attentiveness among congregants; and providing pastoral care. In fulfilling these roles, the English language pastor will collaborate with the English Worship and English Shepherding Ministries.
The English Language Pastor will also minister to the community beyond the walls of NSBC through missional outreach and evangelistic activity appropriate for the particular needs and sensitivities of the surrounding neighborhood, which includes (but is not limited to) families, young professional adults, long time residents and a large LGBTQ community. Uniquely, our church community does not currently reflect the broader community outside of our walls, which provides an opportunity. As a member of the pastoral team, the English Language pastor will also work closely and on equal footing with four other pastors of diverse racial, theological, and cultural backgrounds; offering and receiving support for the ministry of each pastor; sharing in the administration and management of all-church ministries and programs; and working together to communicate a shared vision for NSBC’s continuing mission and service. The English Language Pastor will hold mutual accountability with other members of the pastoral team, and report to the Pastoral Relations Committee and the Church Council as supervising bodies. The pastor will attend Church Council meetings. Qualifications: Our next pastor must have a Masters of Divinity and be ordained within ABC-USA. Minimum 5 years of experience in local church ministry. Must have 5+ years working in a multicultural, cross-cultural and/or diverse environment. Must have experience working in an effective, collaborative leadership team within the ministry of the church. Preferred but not required: bilingual. Compensation Package: Competitive salary for full time employment. Housing, health care, MMBB, continuing education funds included.
